You know you need a good opt-in list. After reading countless articles and seeking expert advice, reading the success stories of people creating a small fortune with opt-in lists, you realize its time to stop learning and start doing. So you use all that research to  put everything into place and wonder why you aren’t making a profit.

After all, you have hired writers, have created a decent sized list and still little action takers, very few sales and you are getting frustrated.

You are trying to figure out what went wrong; where you failed. After all, you chose a topic area you thought would be popular and earn money. But there’s more to closing sales than simply offering a product that people want. You have to have the RIGHT LIST. The list should be made up of people who want what you have to sell.

Here are three ways to build a profitable opt-in list.

1) Your audience must first trust you and the quality of your products. There needs to be substance behind the promotion. Just launching your opt-in to your target audience will not build instant credibility.  One way to build credibility is to build a stream of content that people can use to “qualify” you as a seller. The content should support the product(s) you are selling. If you are selling an ebook about finances, there should be numerous articles on your site about finances. Similar content should also be shared on other sites, including social media, in forums, on blogs, in newsletters and anywhere your target audience might be looking for it. Create content that satisfies  their wants and need. Join forums – participate in social media discussions, provide expert advice, promote others.

BE A RESOURCE. Once you have established credibility that builds trust, it will be much easier to grow a quality optin list of willing buyers.

2) Find a product or service that people want and need. Invest your   time, effort and money in a service and product that you have researched, in which you are an expert. Use a variety of means to promote your optin offer, and include ways that allow others to share your offer using social sharing buttons and tools on your website; create images that are shareable and snippets of content that make it easy to post online.

3) Create joint venture partnerships to cross-promote one another’s lists. Find people who have experience in partnering in these types of promotions.  Realize that it may take time to find the right partners especially if you don’t yet have a large list of your own. If you are not yet ready to form a joint-venture, ask for their help and advice. Most successful people are willing to share their expertise and in turn, help others become successful.

Building a profitable opt-in list doesn’t happen overnight. They take time and effort. Opt-in lists are built from scratch, as your list grows, its also important to maintain the quality of your list. Keep it organized and manageable. Stay connected to the people on your lists.  Most successful list-builders communicate with their audience at least once a week.  They know that by doing so, they are staying top of mind so when the people on the list are ready to buy, they will, from you instead of your competitors.
