About our Guest Expert:
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Vanessa Torres began her career as an entertainment journalist in Los Angeles. As one of the youngest reporters on staff at the industry trade publication, Variety, she quickly learned how to navigate the world of big business and celebrity – often a delicate and awkward dance. Burnout soon set in and she happily transitioned her skills to the burgeoning world of the Internet. Marrying her talents and experience, she began managing content for a boutique web design firm dealing exclusively with celebrity clientele. Building and developing official websites for celebrities and media entities eventually led to producing original online content and exploring the world of strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and ultimately, brand development and management.
In early 2008, Vanessa started her own consulting practice, helping small businesses and start-ups create or re-evaluate their online presence. Often acting as “translator” between a client and a developer, Vanessa helps ensure a smooth development phase and an accurate understanding of the creative process. She also assists clients with developing and incorporating a social media strategy into their overall marketing campaign.
As a writer, author, blogger, content manager, and journalist, Vanessa has been able to adapt her skills to a variety of mediums. She currently manages her own blog for single women (www.thathappenedtome.com), and contributes to several other blogs and websites. She has spoken to various professional groups about how to use social media for their business/clients, and facilitated networking events for women business owners in Los Angeles. In addition, Vanessa has worked extensively with UNICEF, traveling to Africa with the organization in 2004 (on a trip that was featured in Marie Clare magazine), as well as the Red Cross, assisting with their efforts in Houston, Texas following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
