Back in the year 2000, I attended a small business conference that would completely change the trajectory of my career—and my life.
One of the keynote speakers shared a powerful story about creating an eCommerce organization for Black business owners. Their passion was contagious, and as I sat listening, I felt an idea spark inside me. At that moment, a question formed:
“If they can create a thriving community to support their audience, why can’t I do the same for women in business?”
That single moment of inspiration planted the seed for what would eventually grow into Women in Ecommerce™ (WECAI)—a global community dedicated to helping women entrepreneurs learn, connect, and thrive in the ever-changing world of online business.
The Early Days: Building a Community From Scratch
In 2000, the internet was still in its infancy when it came to small businesses. Social media as we know it today didn’t exist. E-commerce was just starting to boom, but very few women had access to resources or support tailored to their unique challenges and opportunities.
I knew there needed to be a space where women could collaborate instead of compete, share resources, and gain visibility for their businesses.
The first version of Women in Ecommerce was humble—a small group of passionate women eager to learn and grow together. Over time, it evolved into an international membership organization offering training, networking, and promotional opportunities to women around the world.
Today, Women in Ecommerce includes a dynamic mix of business owners, thought leaders, and changemakers united by one goal: helping women succeed online while lifting each other up.
Why WECAI Exists: Our Core Mission
From the beginning, the mission of Women in Ecommerce has been simple yet powerful:
To provide women with the tools, training, and connections they need to grow their businesses and achieve greater visibility online.
This mission has guided everything we’ve done, from hosting online events and publishing resources to launching Her Business Listings Directory and My Pink Pages Podcast Directory, both of which connect women to opportunities for exposure and collaboration.
Lessons Learned Along the Journey
Over more than two decades of leading Women in Ecommerce, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons about building and sustaining a membership organization:
1. Start With a Clear Purpose
A community without a strong mission will struggle to stay focused. Before you launch, answer these questions:
- Who is this group for?
- What problem does it solve?
- How will it make members’ lives or businesses better?
For WECAI, our purpose has always been to help women get found online and grow their businesses. That clarity has kept us on track through every season of growth.
2. Focus on Connection, Not Just Content
Information is everywhere. What people crave most is connection.
Membership organizations thrive when members feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger than themselves.
At WECAI, we create opportunities for networking, collaboration, and real conversations—not just passive consumption of content.
3. Start Small, Then Scale
You don’t need thousands of members to make an impact. Start with a small, committed group of people who are excited about your mission.
As the community grows, you can add more resources, events, and membership tiers.
4. Provide Consistent Value
The #1 reason people join—and stay—in a membership is value.
Offer a mix of educational resources, networking opportunities, and visibility tools to keep members engaged and excited.
At WECAI, this has looked like:
- Monthly virtual networking events
- Online training and workshops
- Directories to help women promote their businesses
- Exclusive publications and features
5. Build a Strong Team
No one can run a thriving membership organization alone.
From volunteers to board members to virtual assistants, having a supportive team makes it possible to grow without burning out.
Why Memberships Matter More Than Ever
In today’s fast-paced digital world, women entrepreneurs face unique challenges—balancing their personal and professional lives while navigating the complexities of marketing, technology, and visibility.
Membership groups like Women in Ecommerce provide:
- A safe space to learn and ask questions
- Access to mentors and peers who understand their journey
- Opportunities to collaborate instead of compete
- Visibility and promotion they might not achieve on their own
Community is more than a nice-to-have—it’s a catalyst for success.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how a single moment of inspiration at a small business conference has blossomed into a global network of women supporting women.
Over the years, Women in Ecommerce has:
- Helped thousands of women gain online visibility for their businesses
- Launched multiple directories to showcase members’ work
- Published online magazines and resources for female entrepreneurs
- Created a ripple effect of empowerment across industries and continents
The impact goes far beyond my original vision—and it’s still growing.
Final Thoughts: Start Where You Are
If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own membership organization, here’s my advice: start small, stay focused, and lead with heart.
You don’t need to have all the answers or a perfect plan. You just need a mission you believe in and the courage to bring people together.
When you create a space for collaboration and growth, you’re not just building a membership—you’re building a legacy.
Join the Movement
Women in Ecommerce is always welcoming new members who want to grow their businesses, increase their visibility, and connect with a supportive community of women entrepreneurs.
